Mystifier

Today in 1993 Mystifier released the album Göetia

Salvador, Bahía, Brazil Black/Death Metal
Status:Active
Years active:1989-present
From listening to Mystifier's corrosive, hyper-speed, symphonic-tinged black metal, you'd never guess that they hailed from the very tropical, richly historical seaside city of Salvador, Brazil. Yet, this is the truth and the whole truth (honest!) behind this long-running satanic metal group, which was first formed by guitarist Beelzebubth in 1989. Vocalist Naosouninguem, bassist Behemoth, and drummer Lucifuge rounded out the lineup that recorded the ten-song Tormenting the Holy Trinity demo, as well as the locally distributed "The Evil Ascension Returns" single before signing with France's Osmose Productions and releasing 1992's Wicca debut. Second album Goetia introduced new vocalist Asmodeeus, but further member defections and various financial difficulties sidetracked Mystifier for the next three years, so that they only returned to action with their career-defining (in most every way, actually) third LP, The World Is So Good That Who Made It Doesn't Live Here. New drummer Louis Bear joined the group at this time, and good fortune finally smiled upon them when Greek black metal gods Rotting Christ picked them as the support act on their South American tour. To commemorate their tenth anniversary in 1999, the band's now legendary first demo was given an international release by Eldritch Music under the title The Fourth Evil Calling from the Abyss -- Tormenting the Holy Trinity, and 2001 saw the arrival of Mystifier's fourth official album (fifth overall), Profanus, released worldwide by Crash/Pavement Music two years later.

Cerebral Fix

Today in 1992 Cerebral Fix released the album Death Erotica

Birmingham, England Crossover/Thrash Metal

Status:Active

Years active: 1986-1993, 2006-present

One of the core early British thrash bands of the late eighties, Cerebral Fix's earlier roots lay more in the hardcore/crossover realm, as heard on their '88 debut Life Sucks ... And Then You Die!. By 1990 they were signed to Roadrunner Records and on that label they released their two best-known albums, Tower Of Spite and Bastards, with a style more firmly entrenched in the classic thrash of that time. After their fourth album (Death Erotica) they disbanded in 1993, but some thirteen years later a mostly original lineup announced their reformation.

The Clash

Today in 1979 The Clash released the album London Calling

London, United Kingdom Punk rock

Status:Split Up

Years active 1976–86

The Sex Pistols may have been the first British punk rock band, but the Clash were the definitive British punk rockers. Where the Pistols were nihilistic, the Clash were fiery and idealistic, charged with righteousness and a leftist political ideology. From the outset, the band was more musically adventurous, expanding its hard rock & roll with reggae, dub, and rockabilly among other roots musics. Furthermore, they were blessed with two exceptional songwriters in Joe Strummer and Mick Jones, each with a distinctive voice and style. The Clash copped heavily from classic outlaw imagery, positioning themselves as rebels with a cause. As a result, they won a passionately devoted following on both sides of the Atlantic. While they became rock & roll heroes in the U.K., second only to the Jam in terms of popularity, it took the Clash several years to break into the American market, and when they finally did in 1982, they imploded several months later. Though the Clash never became the superstars they always threatened to become, they restored passion and protest to rock & roll. For a while, they really did seem like "the only band that mattered."

The Singles is a compilation album by The Clash. It includes all their singles, in their single versions, except for 1977's Capital Radio (which, whilst not eligible for chart entry due to being a free EP, is still considered a single) as well as 1985's "This Is England" due to the Cut the Crap album being disowned by the band at that time.

This collection contains the actual A-side recording of the "This Is Radio Clash" single. Some other compilations such as The Essential Clash and the remastered version of Super Black Market Clash contain the B-side "Radio Clash" under the title "This Is Radio Clash" instead.

A remastered version, (495353 2) with slightly altered artwork, was released in 1999 as part of Sony's Clash reissue campaign.

Sadistik Exekution

Today in 1991 Sadistik Exekution released there debut album The Magus

Sydney, New South Wales,Australia Death/Black Metal
Status:Split-up
Years active: 1985-2004, 2009
Sadistik Exekution was legendary in Australian metal circles, and one of the better known bands to come from down under. The band formed in 1986 and apparently gained a large following before even playing live or recording, due to the publicity stunts of co-founders Rok and Dave Slave. They recorded sporadically over the last fifteen years or so, with their albums reportedly all in a similar style (the one reviewed here is 1997's K.A.O.S.). Musically, Sadistic Exekution played a rather loose, messy, frenzied death metal, with some grind tendencies, though without the technical prowess of some of the better grind bands out there. It's all a bit much, with most songs pretty much the same speed and volume, the band really never coming up for air but instead content to rampage uncontrolled through their musical jungle. Those seeking subtlety, technicality, or diversity had better look elsewhere, but for those just looking for a mindless death bash might take to these guys. They broke up soon after their last album in 2004, and played a reunion gig in 2009.

Afflicted

Today in 1990 Afflicted released there debut single Ingrained

Stockholm,Sweden Progressive/Technical Death Metal (early), Power Metal (later)
Status:Split-up
Years active: 1988-1990 (as Afflicted Convulsion), 1990-1995
Afflicted's 1992 debut, Prodigal Sun, was an album slightly ahead of its time -- rooted in death metal, but possessing a greater degree of complexity and technicality than most of its contemporaries, a style that is more prevalent nowadays than back in 1992. Though the album received good reviews, it wasn't a major seller, and three years would go by before the band would re-emerge on a new label with a new album, Dawn Of Glory, which reportedly is less death-oriented (it is not reviewed here). The band broke up shortly thereafter. Most recently, two members from that second album lineup have formed the very different Defender, a traditional power metal band.

Helloween

Today in 1989 Helloween released the album Pumpkin Tracks

Hamburg,Germany Power/Speed Metal
Years active: 1978-1981 (as Gentry), 1981-1982 (as Second Hell), 1982-1983 (as Iron Fist), 1983-present
One of the "big four" of the first wave of 80's German power metal bands (alongside Grave Digger, Running Wild, and Rage), Helloween might just be the most influential of them all, as their works such as Walls Of Jericho and the two Keeper Of The Seven Keys albums proving to be a prime reference point for any number of European speed/power metal bands over the last three decades. With the exception of a dip during the Pink Bubbles/ Chameleon era (neither of which received much critical acclaim, nor the usual fan interest), the career of the pumpkinheads has been steady and solid almost from the beginning, with their fan base still strong some 30 years after their debut album.
