Today in 1997 Sacred Steel released there debut album Reborn in Steel
Ludwigsburg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany Epic Power Metal
Status:Active
Years active: 1997-present
Sacred Steel was one of two bands that emerged as a result of the breakup of Tragedy Divine, with vocalist Gerrit Mutz and guitarist Jörg Knittel pursuing a more traditional metal direction as opposed to the more progressive stylings of the other post-TD band, Spiral Tower. Their style derives strongly from mid-eighties speed metal, crossing prime Helloween with Mutz's whiny, John Cyriis (Agent Steel) vocal style. Lyrically, Manowar-style metal anthems seem to be the focus, judging by titles such as "Sacred Steel", "Sword Of The King", "True Force Of Iron Glory", etc. Typical of German speed/power bands, the name of the game here is not originality (one might think that eventually they'd stretch their own musical boundaries a bit), but they have never wavered from their true metal stance, and that continues to serve them well.
Today in 1997 Rough Silk released the album Mephisto
Hanover, Lower Saxony, Germany Melodic Power Metal
Status:Active
Years active:1989-2004, 2006-2012, 2015-present
Formed in 1989 and originally comprising Jan Barnett (vocals/guitar), Herbert Hartmann (vocals/drums), Ferdy Doernberg (vocals/keyboards/guitar), Hilmer Staacke (d. 25 May 2006; guitar) and Ralf Schwertner (bass), Hannover, Germany-based rock band Rough Silk represented part of the new wave of European rock music. With an easily detectable bent towards American AOR stylings, in the vein of bands such as Rainbow, Bon Jovi and REO Speedwagon, Rough Silk struggled to throw off accusations of imitation. However, they have proved competent at their craft, most notably on two early 90s albums recorded at Dieter Dierks’ German studio. The second of these, Walls Of Never, was the better, with songs such as ‘Toxical Roses’ and ‘One More For The Ride’ demonstrating the band’s ability to tackle contrasting material without losing momentum.
Hartmann, Doernberg and Schwertner remained at the helm into the new millennium on a series of albums for the Massacre and SPV labels. Other members have included Thomas Ludolphy (vocals), Andreas Laszewski (guitar), Curt Doernberg (drums) and Nils Wunderlich (vocals/guitar).
Today in 1997 Anti-Nowhere League released the album Scum
Royal Tunbridge Wells, England Hardcore punk, Punk rock
Status:Active
Years active 1980–1989,1992–present
Even when judged by the often confrontational standards of U.K. punk, the Anti-Nowhere League were a band committed to offending people. Looking less like a group of bohemian rebels than an especially unsavory biker gang eager to stomp someone (frontman Animal admits to being a former member of outlaw motorcycle clubs), the Anti-Nowhere League made an immediate impact when they burst onto the British rock scene in 1980. They were heroes to hard-boiled U.K. punks, and to nearly everyone else they were an affront to all decency -- which, of course, made the punks love them all the more.

Magoo - rhythm guitar

Scum is the third studio album by English punk rock band the Anti-Nowhere League and the first album of new material released since the original band's breakup ten years previously. A new lineup is featured, with only lead singer Animal and guitarist Magoo remaining from the band which recorded the much-criticised The Perfect Crime LP in 1987. The album also marks a return to the ANL's "classic" punk-metal sound.

Formed in 1995, Anorexia Nervosa specializes in symphonic black metal, along the lines of, say, Dimmu Borgir. The French black metal scene has blossomed in recent years, with arguably more standout bands than any non-Scandinavian country (examples include Seth, Himinbjorg, and Blut Aus Nord), and these guys deserve to be mentioned in the same breath.

Exile is the first studio album by the French symphonic black metal band Anorexia Nervosa. It was released in 1997, through Season of Mist. It is notable as the band's only industrial metal album, before they became a symphonic black metal band. It is also the only album to feature Marc Zabé as one of the guitarists and Stéphane Gerbaut on vocals, as he was later replaced by R.M.S. Hreidmarr when the band decided to abandon the industrial metal

Accept is arguably the second most popular band to emerge from Germany, behind Scorpions, and like their countrymen, did a lot of their best work before breaking worldwide. The Breaker and Restless And Wild albums showed the band at their metallic best, blending power and speed metal with just enough accessibility to keep it all together. But it was the next album, Balls To The Wall, that finally gave the band worldwide acclaim, with the style of the band shifting slightly towards a more anthemic sound, kind of reminiscient of AC/DC in places. While the band prospered for many years afterward, they didn't quite match the popularity of that album again. The band broke up early in 1997, during with time vocalist Udo Dirkschneider revived his solo band U.D.O., a project he started in 1986 or so and has been thriving in recent years. The other members scattered to various projects, with guitarist Wolf Hoffman doing some solo work and drummer Stefan Schwarzmann joining Udo for a time. They reunited for a time in 2005 for a 25th anniversary tour, went dormant for a spell, and then came back together in 2009 with a new vocalist, former TT Quick frontman Mark Tornillo. And the band plays on ...

Today in 1995 Avulsed released there debut album Eminence in Putrescence
Madrid,Spain Death Metal
Status:Active
Years active: 1991-present
Avulsed was created in 1992 by vocalist Dave Rotten, bassist Lucky, drummer Toni and Haemorrhage man Luisma. With this line-up a demo tape,'Embalmed In Blood', emerged and by November of that year guitarist Jose Cabra was enrolled. Five months later a second effort,'Deformed Beyond Belief' was issued as Avulsed began playing live scoring gigs with Cancer, Cerebral Fix, Gomorrha and Intoxication pushing sales of the demo beyond the 1,200 mark. A live tape, 'Live In Perfect Deformity' was also issued.
The hard work paid off in September 1993 when Greek label Molon Lave Records offered a contract. Avulsed's 'Deformed Beyond Belief' sessions becoming one half of a split CD shared with Greek act Acid Death. During December of that year Toni quit and Avulsed made up the ranks with former Intoxication man Furni.
1994 found Avulsed gigging alongside Lusimas's side project Haemorrhage. Releases that year saw the 'Carnivoricity' 7" EP emerging through the German Malodorous Mangled Innards label featuring two originals and a cover of 'Demoniac Possession' by Chilian act Pentagram. A mini album of the same name was issued in June adding extra tracks including more covers in 'As I Behold I Despise', originally by Finnish act Demigod, and a take on Brujeria's 'Matando Guerros'.
Discontent within the Avulsed ranks as to their guitarists commitment to their act forced Lusimas dismissal as Avulsed drafted erstwhile Sacrophobia guitarist Juancar for gigs with Hellbound and Vader followed by European dates in February 1996 together with Sinister, Creepmime and Darkseed.
Lucky departed just prior to the release of 'Eminence In Putrescence' in November 1996. In now a now established tradition the record would contain a cover version, this time a rendition of Barón Rojo's 'Resisire'. Colombian label Quirofamo Productions would issue a collection of early demos and live cuts, including a cover of the Asphyx track 'Mutilating Process', billed as 'Seven Years Of Decay' in September of 1999.
The 'Stabwound Orgasm' album would amply illustrate the band's ascendency selling more than double it's predecessor in Europe alone. In Russia the album, complete with bonus tracks, was licensed to Irond Records. World War III Records would also take the album for North America.
As 2001 Avulsed announced the signing of a new record deal with the Avantgarde label. The band would headline the Murcia 'Clash Of The Helmets' festival the following month, topping a bill over Solaris, The Awakening and ETERNAL CRY. During March Avulsed issued a limited edition mini album 'Bloodcovered' comprising entirely of cover songs. Bands honoured included Morbid Angel's 'Immortal Rites', Carcass' 'Embryonic Necropsy And Devourment', Cannibal Corpse's 'Edible Autopsy' and Sodom's 'Magic Dragon' and a live version of Sepultura's 'Inner Self'.
Touring would find Avulsed appearing in America at the April 'Metal Meltdown' festival in New Jersey and closer to home at the Portuguese 'Steel Warriors Rebellion' festival.
A new studio album, 'Yearning for The Grotesque', initially set for a November 2002 release through the Italian AvantGarde Music label was pushed back to an early 2003 release. However, the record hit a further obstacle when the pressing plant refused to reproduce the band's original suggestions for cover art. Avulsed signed with Slovakian label Metal Age Productions in January of 2004 for the release of the band's fourth album. The group entered VRS Studios in Madrid to record 'Gorespattered Suicide' in July. The album, which included a cover of MOTÖRHEAD's 'Ace Of Spades', would be mixed by Hate Eternal's Erik Rutan at Mana Recording Studios in Florida.
Avulsed's 2005 'Gorespattered' world tour took the band to Japan , Australia and New Zealand in April followed by festival appearances at the German 'Fuck The Commerce' event, the London 'Deathfest' and Czech 'Obscene Extreme' show.
The group opened 2006 with the EP 'Reanimations' through Electric Chair Music, this set including a brace of new tracks in 'River Runs Red' and 'Foetal Consolation', a remake of a song from their 1992 debut demo 'Unconscious Pleasure' plus three cover songs, W.A.S.P.'s 'I Wanna Be Somebody', Gorefest's 'Mental Misery and Exodus' 'Piranha'. Bonus tracks comprised no less than eight Avulsed cover versions performed by five Spanish acts, Terroristars, Kaothic, Witches' Sabbath, Byleth and Abÿfs, plus three international bands in Argentina's In Element, Algeria's Carnavage and Twisted Fate from Australia.

Dissection is heralded as one of the founders of the so-called Gothenburg sound, which basically adds a melodic touch (often in the form of Maiden-ish twin guitar riffs) to death metal. Both of their albums are regarded as death metal classics, with Storm Of The Light's Bane getting the nod as the better of the two. Though the band's popularity was still rising, by 1997 internal strife amongst the band members led to most of the band leaving the band for one reason or another (two of them, Johan Norman and Tobias Kellgren, eventually formed Soulreaper), leaving founder Jon Nödtveidt bandless. Later, in 1998, Nödtveidt was convicted of murder and sentenced to prison, effectively putting Dissection on indefinite hold.
With Nödtveidt's release in 2004, Dissection was put back in action. Former Emperor drummer Bard Faust briefly joined Nödtveidt to form the nucleus of a new lineup, but he left after only a couple of months. A new lineup eventually stabilized, and the comeback album, Reinkaos, was released in the spring of 2006. Rather abruptly, however, the band announced that a concert in late June would be their last, and later that year (August) came the sad news that that Nödtveidt had committed suicide, thus marking the official end of the band.

Storm of the Light's Bane is the 1995 album release by Swedish black/melodic death metal band Dissection. That same year, Nuclear Blast released a Europe-exclusive special digipak version of the album limited to 500 copies, which upon unfolding formed the shape of a cross with the song's lyrics printed on the sleeves.
This would be the band's last full length album before Nödtveidt's 1997 incarceration for felony murder.
It was re-released in 2002 as a digipak (catalogue number: NB 646-2), this time with the 1997 EP Where Dead Angels Lie as bonus tracks. The album was re-released once again in 2006 by The End Records in a two-disc set, and includes the Where Dead Angels Lie EP, an unreleased EP from 1994 featuring two songs from the album, and an "alternate mix" version of the full album, all remastered from the original master tapes by Håkan Åkesson at Cutting Room, Stockholm, and packaged in a slipcase. This version is touted as the "Ultimate Reissue". The Japanese edition features the bonus track "The Feathers Fell" as track 5, in between "Where Dead Angels Lie" and "Retribution - Storm of the Light's Bane".
As with the first album, Kristian Wåhlin did the cover art
